Senior Business Development Manager
Our Senior Business Development Manager post is a pivotal new role in our organisation. It has been created out of a need to put full-time resource around our business development activities to free up our consultants to deliver outstanding work for clients as the company grows.
Reporting to the Managing Director, this role will lead on all aspects of our business development activities, including bid and tenders, marketing and sales. You’ll work with the company management team to develop our commercial strategy and implement this with the help of our Digital & Marketing Manager.

Dimensions of the Role

Developing Strategy – Working with the Managing Director to develop and implement a commercial strategy that provides a pipeline of work that allows us to sustainably grow the business, freeing consultants up to focus on delivering outstanding work for clients.

Marketing - Working with the Managing Director and Digital & Marketing Manager to develop and implement marketing plans that achieve the objectives of the commercial strategy.

Tenders and Proposals – Leading on all aspects of the end-to-end competitive tendering process, including competitions run under the Public Contracts Regulations (formerly OJEU procedures), further competitions from Framework Agreements and below-threshold proposals.

Client Development – Proactively developing relationships with existing and prospective clients to secure new business and raise the profile of the business in relevant sectors.

Partnership Development – Developing relationships with a wide range of organisations and individuals to form mutually beneficial partnerships, including Framework and managed marketplace operators, other businesses serving relevant sectors, independent consultants, professional membership groups and industry bodies.

Event Management – Organising our attendance at relevant events and conferences and organising our own events, working with our Digital & Marketing Manager.

What we’re looking for:
You’ll lead on a wide variety of tasks to help the business to develop and grow, reflecting the complexity of the sectors with which we do business and the diversity of ways in which our work is secured. This will require an equally diverse skillset – you’ll need to have outstanding written communication skills, able to succinctly communicate complex concepts as part of tenders, and be a natural at developing relationships with a wide range of people.
Essential Experience:

Expert understanding of public sector procurement processes from the supplier’s perspective, including above-threshold PCR (formerly OJEU) procedures and relevant Framework Agreements. The vast majority of our work is secured through competitive tendering so significant experience in this area is essential.

Expert knowledge and use of e-procurement portals, including (but not limited to) Proactis, Jaegger, Delta, in-Tend and Government Digital Marketplace.

Experience of the management consultancy industry and/or the supply of professional services with similar characteristics, principally to the public and charitable sectors.

Excellent bid writing skills, with the ability to convey complex content and detail succinctly.

Excellent networking and relationship development skills, with an established relevant network and/or the credibility to quickly build relationships with senior personnel in the public sector, up to and including Chief Executives and political leadership.

Rigorous approach – demonstrating both methodology and creativity in all aspects of work, from developing tender responses to organising events.

Strategic and pragmatic – able to balance ambitious thinking for the future growth of the business with the practical reality of resources and market conditions.
